Communities in Schools serves Floyd County Schools and Rome City Schools!
CIS is the nation’s largest and most effective organization dedicated to keeping students in school. We consider collaboration to be our major currency in partnering with organizations and companies to serve our students, our schools, and our community. Far too many young people are not reaching their full potential and goals. And, often times, schools are not equipped to deal with the multi-layered and complex issues of today’s youth. As such, Communities In Schools of Rome-Floyd is here to help!
The CIS Mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
The CIS Vision is that all students in Rome and Floyd County will graduate from high school ready for college or work.
The “Community” Aspect of CIS
CIS attempts to build a community of support in schools by placing Site Coordinators in the building. They work in concert with administration, faculty, and staff to address student attendance, behavior, and academic progress which is based on a pre-determined case plan. Additionally, this professional provides school-wide services based on an annual needs assessment.
Every 26 seconds a student drops out of school. That equates to about 7,000 a day. Annually, that is approximately 1.2 million students that begin their adult life in a deficient situation. They are many barriers that contribute to this phenomena, several of which relate to non-academic factors. Following is a sampling of what our Site Coordinators may offer to CIS students:
Individual and Group Mentoring: CIS has partnered with the two local school systems, business and industry, faith-based entities, and civic groups to serve as mentors for our students.
Parental Engagement: We sponsor events like “Donuts for Dads” and “Muffins for Moms” to promote parental involvement and to recruit potential mentors and volunteers.
Community Service: We place importance on exposing our students to opportunities where they gain an understanding and appreciation for the world around them by providing ways to give back.
Personal Growth and Development: We facilitate students building leadership and life skills, explore career options, attend college fairs and field trips, and participate in shadowing experiences.
CIS could not have thrived over the past 25 years and currently without a substantial amount of community support! Whether it’s in-kind support, grant assistance, or financial donations, these companies and organizations have made it possible for us to do our work for the students in Rome and Floyd County!
